Sustainability
The Lidingöloppet aims to provide a social and nature-close experience beyond the ordinary - as exceptional in the future as since the first race in 1965. To achieve this, extensive sustainability work is carried out, divided into environmental, social, and economic perspectives, as well as efforts focused on five of the UN's global sustainability goals.
Lidingöloppet's work with the UN's goals for sustainable development
Lidingöloppet has, among the UN's 17 goals for sustainable development, chosen to focus on the following five global goals:
3. Good Health and Well-being
The Lidingöloppet aims to be a driving force and inspiration for exercise, health, and well-being for participants of all ages, from all backgrounds, with any starting point, and at all levels of ambition - every day and throughout the year.
12. Responsible Consumption and Production
The Lidingöloppet will collaborate with suppliers and sponsors who share our values. This contributes to better products, reduces risks, and strengthens our brand. Through dialogue with our suppliers and sponsors, we have the opportunity to create ripples on the water for sustainable development.
13. Climate Action
With nature as its arena, the Lidingöloppet always considers the climate. This means that we strive to reduce our impact on the climate - especially by helping participants travel sustainably to our events and through conscious choices of suppliers, waste sorting, and reuse during all races. Even within the Lidingöloppet's operations, conscious choices are made to reduce the carbon footprint. We primarily choose eco-labeled products, recycle all resources, prioritize meetings via video or phone, and choose trains over planes for travel.
8. Decent Work and Economic Growth
The Lidingöloppet, one of Lidingö's strongest brands, aims to work in symbiosis with the local business community in and around Lidingö. The races should also be economically beneficial for non-profit sports associations for children and youth, which are allocated 100% of the surplus from the Lidingöloppet's events.
17. Partnerships for the Goals
The Lidingöloppet is run by the two non-profit associations IFK Lidingö Friidrott and IFK Lidingö Ski and Orienteering Club. We aim for long-term partnerships with our partners, suppliers, collaborating associations, and the local business community. We are proud to be part of En Svensk Klassiker and through our events and our structured joint sustainability work, we contribute to continuous improvements to achieve our goals. Social sustainability work
Lidingöloppet aims to be a driving force for Swedish recreational sports - a timeless source of inspiration for sports community, public health, and a Sweden in motion in a time after the pandemic and for a society in constant change. Throughout the year, even between the regular race events, Lidingöloppet shares, through our communication channels, tips on movement and healthy habits for all conditions.
In addition to promoting the joy of sports, Lidingöloppet supports, through our events, several important societal projects - from cancer research (in the Pink Ribbon race) and blood donation (Blood Circuit) to club sports for children and youth (during all events).
Environmental sustainability work
The Lidingöloppet's environmental sustainability work includes two main focus areas: 1. to minimize the climate impact from travel and logistics associated with the races, and 2. to ensure that all waste during the events is taken care of and recycled.
Regarding focus area 1, Lidingöloppet carries out extensive efforts to guide participants towards sustainable transportation to/from the races. Through Lidingöloppet's collaborative partners in the transportation sector, it is now possible to travel collectively to and from the events from large parts of Sweden by intercity bus, train, and local bus. Before the races, we also carry out targeted communication efforts to help participants choose alternatives to cars in favor of bicycles and/or public transport. For participants who do not want or cannot travel across Sweden and the world, there is also the opportunity to participate in events such as TCS Lidingöloppet and the Pink Ribbon race at a distance through Rosa Bandet-loppet@Home.
Regarding focus area 2, Lidingöloppet has a very careful handling of waste in and around the arenas. Along all tracks, there are facilities to recycle materials, and in cooperation with volunteers, meticulous cleaning work is carried out during and after all events.
Economic sustainability work
Lidingöloppet is a strong brand, whose activities create conditions for non-profit sports activities for children and youth. Therefore, we strive to continue providing attractive experiences for runners all over the world. To further develop our events, we use regular participant surveys. Lidingöloppet is also a strong link in Lidingö's tourism industry and aims to be a credible partner to the local business community in connection with the races.
